August 5 - Sketch to Screen: The Art of Hollywood Costume Design
Our next trip is to the Oklahoma City Art Museum (indoor activity!!) Sketch to Screen will be the travelling exhibit along with the other fabulous works of art that on display. (like the Chihuly glass!)
The underlying success of Sketch to Screen is that it tells so many stories in a cohesive way. Movie clips, costume sketches, photographs, and garments all portray costume design-but each story is unique; from the aluminum chain mail worn in "Gladiator", to Ginger Rogers' feather dress that kept tickling Fred Astaire's nose!
Sketch to Screen: The Art of Hollywood Costume Design explores the vital artistic contribution of costume design throughout the history of the American motion picture industry. More than 60 garments, accessories, documents, and design sketches from the silent film era to present day will be on display. These objects demonstrate the range of creativity and craftsmanship that costume designers use to construct film characters through clothing. The exhibition will highlight the seminal contributions of costume designers from the Hollywood studio era, such as Walter Plunkett, Gilbert Adrian, Travis Banton, and Edith Head, while tracing the evolution of the often overlooked costume designer's role in character development in contemporary films. Items include: * Garments and accessories from silent film stars Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford, Gloria Swanson, and Rudolph Valentino * Three Scarlett O'Hara gowns from Gone With the Wind, designed by Walter Plunkett * Garments and accessories from Western stars Tom Mix and John Wayne * An Audrey Hepburn suit, designed by Givenchy, from Funny Face * Christopher Reeve's Superman costume * Gowns worn by Jean Harlow, Marlene Dietrich, Bette Davis and Greta Garbo * Robert DeNiro's canary yellow suit from Casino and boxing robe from Raging Bull * Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan's disco costumes from Mamma Mia! * Johnny Depp's suit and bullet proof vest from Public Enemies * Oscar winning garments from Titanic, Ben-Hur, Moulin Rouge, Camelot, Gladiator, The Great Gatsby, Chicago, and Elizabeth: The Golden Age .
